Protect Your Business: How to Spot and Prevent Counterfeit Banknotes

The Bank of England is encouraging local businesses to stay alert to the risks of counterfeit banknotes and has made it easier than ever to get the right training and resources to protect your business.

As the UK’s central bank, the Bank of England provides free training materials and runs the Banknote Checking Scheme, designed to help retailers and business owners spot counterfeit banknotes and stay up to date with the latest developments.

By joining the Banknote Checking Scheme, businesses can:

  • Reduce financial losses and reputational damage caused by counterfeit notes.

  • Build a direct relationship with the Bank of England, receiving updates on new banknotes and security features.

  • Strengthen community resilience and help prevent counterfeit currency from circulating locally.

All training materials are free and easy to access.
Visit the Advice for retailers and businesses webpage for downloadable posters, booklets, training videos and online training. You can also request printed copies using the online order form.

The Banknote Checking Scheme webpage also provides details on the benefits of becoming a supporter and guidance on how to sign up.

As a BID, we’re proud to support this initiative and encourage all Godalming businesses to take part.
Together, we can help protect our community from counterfeit currency and keep our high street safe and secure.
