Godalming town centre welcomes close to a million visits over the summer

Godalming town centre recorded a 4.1% increase in footfall over summer 2026, with approximately 36,500 more visits than the same period last year, according to the latest figures from Place Informatics.

The data shows consistent year-on-year growth across June, July and August, with Godalming performing strongly compared with other local towns. June saw the largest increase, with footfall up 5.1% year-on-year, followed by growth of 3.9% in July and 3.2% in August.

In total, the town centre recorded more than 925,000 visits across the three core summer months.

Attracting visitors to Godalming

Alongside monitoring footfall, Godalming BID uses Place Informatics data to better understand where visitors travel from, how they use the town centre and where opportunities exist to attract new audiences.

The latest figures show that Godalming continues to attract visitors from beyond its immediate catchment area, including those travelling from more than 10 miles away. Raising Godalming's profile as a destination and encouraging more visitors from further afield remains a key priority for Discover Godalming.

This summer, Discover Godalming launched its History Mystery family trail, featuring Godfrey the Goose, supported by a targeted marketing campaign reaching 30,000 households. The initiative was designed to encourage families to discover Godalming, explore its businesses and spend more time in the town centre.

Positive momentum continues into September

The encouraging trend continued into September, with footfall increasing by a further 3.8% compared with September 2025. This was ahead of both the South East regional average of 2.8% and the UK average of 3.3%, continuing Godalming's positive year-on-year performance.

Godalming BID will continue to use these insights to inform its destination marketing activity and identify opportunities to support local businesses.
